HAST (Highly Accelerated Stress Test) - definition

HAST (Highly Accelerated Stress Test) is an accelerated reliability testing method of electronic components, which involves subjecting them to extremes of humidity and temperature to rapidly detect potential defects or degradation mechanisms. The test is carried out in pressure chambers where elevated temperatures (usually above 100°C) and high relative humidity (reaching 85-100%) create an environment that significantly accelerates ageing processes.

In contrast to a standard humidity test, HAST takes place under positive pressure, which has the effect of reducing many times the time needed to reveal failures related to moisture diffusion, electrolytic corrosion, ion penetration or delamination of material structures. This procedure not only speeds up the identification of structural or manufacturing weaknesses, but also makes it possible to compare the quality of different batches or deliveries of components.

HAST is primarily used in the semiconductor industry, in the manufacture of integrated circuits, capacitors, sensors and other sensitive electronic components that must meet stringent reliability standards, especially in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, medical or military. With the ability to detect defects early in the product lifecycle, the method supports qualification and validation processes and contributes to improving the overall quality of products.

In order for the test to be of diagnostic value, its conditions must be strictly controlled and comply with specific standards (e.g. JEDEC JESD22-A118). Appropriate interpretation of the results also requires consideration of the application context of the component, as accelerated ageing does not always reflect actual operating conditions.

Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation. The catalog includes over 1,500,000 products from 1,300 leading manufacturers. TME’s modern logistics centers in Łódź and Rzgów (Poland), with a combined area of over 40,000 m², ship nearly 6,000 packages daily to customers in more than 150 countries.

TME also invests in the development of knowledge and skills of young engineers and electronics enthusiasts through the TME Education project, and supports the tech community by organizing the TechMasterEvent series, promoting innovation and experience exchange.
