A Heatspreader is a passive component used in electronic designs to efficiently distribute heat generated by semiconductor components such as processors, memory chips, power transistors or LED modules. Its main function is to increase the surface area of heat dissipation, allowing for even temperature distribution and reducing local overheating points that could adversely affect device durability and performance.
Heatspreaders are made from materials with high thermal conductivity, most commonly copper, aluminium or their alloys. Their design can take the form of flat wafers, guards or specially moulded components integrated into the IC chassis. In many cases, they are directly connected to the surface of the heat source using materials that improve thermal conductivity, such as pastes, washers or phased thermal connectors.
Unlike a classic heatsink, whose function is to dissipate heat to the environment, a heatspreader acts mainly as an intermediary - transporting heat from a point source to a larger contact area, often working in conjunction with more advanced cooling systems. Thanks to its design, it helps to reduce temperature gradients and increase the efficiency of the heat exchange in the downstream cooling stages.
Heatspreader technology is particularly important in high power density devices where traditional cooling methods prove insufficient. Their proper design has a direct impact on the reliability of electronic circuits and meeting thermal requirements in industrial, consumer and military applications.
