HMI - definition

The HMI (Human-Machine Interface) is a user interface that enables communication between a human and a machine, control system or process. It acts as an intermediary through which the operator can observe the status of the machine, enter data, control parameters and respond to warning or emergency signals. HMIs are used in industrial automation systems, robotics, energy, transportation, as well as in everyday devices such as household appliances and vehicles.

HMI solutions range from physical operator panels with buttons, lights and displays to advanced graphical environments with touch screens, process visualisation and integration with SCADA systems or PLC. Modern interfaces are characterised by a high level of intuitiveness, often using interactive graphical elements, animations, analogue indicators and contextual alarms. Their design takes into account ergonomics, operational safety and the operator's needs for quick access to key information.

The HMI plays an important role in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of complex process systems. It enables rapid fault diagnosis, data trend analysis, adjustment of settings and real-time control. These Interfaces are also crucial for operational data collection and reporting, supporting decision-making and optimising production processes.

In the context of integration with digital technologies, the HMI can communicate with multiple data sources using different industrial protocols such as Modbus, OPC or Ethernet/IP. Thanks to the development of mobile technologies and cloud technologies, today's HMIs also enable remote access, diagnostics and system configuration, which increases the flexibility and efficiency of technical infrastructure management.
