Hodometer - definition

A Hodometer is a measuring instrument used to determine the distance travelled based on the number of revolutions of a wheel or other rolling element moving along a route. The operation of the hodometer is based on counting the revolutions and converting them into distance using the known diameter of the wheel, allowing the distance to be measured in a direct and mechanically simple manner. The history of this device dates back to ancient times, but both mechanical and electronic versions are in use today.

In modern hodometer systems, optical sensors, magnetic sensors or pulse encoders record the rotational movement and this data is digitally processed to provide information on the distance travelled. Hodometers are an integral part of many land vehicles, mobile robots, agricultural machinery, as well as surveying and measuring equipment used in civil engineering. In vehicles, the hodometer is most often integrated with odometers and navigation systems.

In mobile robotics and Automation, hodometry is used for position estimation based on local motion measurements - so-called 'dead reckoning'. dead reckoning. Although hodometry-based measurements are local and do not need to be referenced to external signals, their accuracy is limited by systematic errors such as wheel slippage, rough terrain or time drift. For this reason, hodometric data are often supplemented with information from other sensors (e.g. GPS, IMU), allowing to fuse data and improve localisation accuracy.

The design of the hodometer must take into account operating conditions such as resistance to dirt, vibration or temperature changes, especially in field applications. Despite the availability of more advanced positioning technologies, hodometers remain an essential and reliable component of many measurement and control systems in transport and industrial technology.
