HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) - definition

HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) is an umbrella term for a set of extensions to UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) technology, developed to increase bandwidth and packet transmission performance in third generation (3G) networks. The technology includes two main components: HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) responsible for speeding up data transmission to the user, and HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) improving performance in the direction from the user to the network.

HSPA was defined by 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) as an evolution of WCDMA systems, enabling much higher data transfer speeds and reduced response time (latency), which significantly increased the comfort of using mobile Internet services. The implementation of HSPA allowed speeds of several to several megabits per second for downloading data and several megabits for uploading, which at the time of its introduction represented a breakthrough in mobile transmission.

The basis of HSPA is dynamic radio resource management, adaptive coding and modulation, and reduced channel access times. The system uses multi-access techniques based on time and code-based channel partitioning and enhanced MAC layer functionality, which is responsible for efficient bandwidth allocation and retransmission of erroneous packets. This enables better use of the available spectrum and adaptation of transmission parameters to current propagation conditions.

HSPA has played a key role in the development of mobile broadband networks, providing a bridge between 3G technologies and LTE systems. Although it is now being gradually displaced by newer solutions, it is still an important part of the telecommunications infrastructure in many regions of the world, particularly where fourth-generation networks are not yet widely available.
