IIoT - definition

IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) is the concept of integrating advanced information technology, communication systems and industrial devices to enable real-time data collection, analysis and exchange in manufacturing, energy and logistics environments. IIoT is based on networks of interconnected sensors, controllers, machines, robots, SCADA and ERP systems that form a distributed structure of intelligent devices capable of autonomous operation and mutual communication.

The primary goal of the IIoT is to optimise production processes, increase operational efficiency, predictive maintenance and reduce costs by introducing advanced monitoring and data analytics. IIoT devices generate vast amounts of information that is processed in real time using edge computing and cloud computing, enabling dynamic decision-making at operational and strategic levels.

The IIoT uses specialised communication protocols such as MQTT, OPC UA or Modbus TCP/IP to ensure secure and reliable data transmission between devices in an industrial environment. Cyber security systems also play an important role, which protect the infrastructure from threats arising from the digital convergence of OT (Operational Technology) and IT (Information Technology) systems. The implementation of IIoT contributes to the development of the concept of Industry 4.0, enabling the creation of autonomous, adaptive and highly integrated manufacturing ecosystems.
