An Inclinometer is a measuring instrument used to determine the angle of inclination of an object with respect to a selected reference level, usually in relation to the horizontal plane. Depending on their design, inclinometers can measure one-dimensional or two-dimensional tilt, providing information on the deviation in one or two perpendicular axes. They are used in civil engineering, geotechnics, mechanics, robotics, Industrial Robotics, and navigation systems.
The operation of an inclinometer is based on the detection of a change in position relative to a gravitational force vector. In analogue devices, this is realised through mechanical components such as pendulums, bubbles in a liquid or moving masses. Modern designs use MEMS (micro-electromechanical) sensors, which measure gravitational accelerations and convert them into tilt angles. These devices offer high precision and can be integrated into electronic systems, enabling digital readout and data transmission.
Inclinometers are particularly useful in monitoring the stability of engineering structures such as dams, bridges, buildings or embankments, where even small deviations can indicate deformations or structural risk. In geotechnics, they are used to measure displacements in soils or slopes by placing probes in special measuring holes. In robotics and mobile electronics, they act as orientation sensors, enabling platform stabilisation and path correction.
The measurement accuracy of an inclinometer depends on its design, measurement range, resistance to interference and quality of calibration. In many applications, resistance to vibration, temperature fluctuations and other environmental factors is also important. In combination with other sensors, such as gyros or magnetometers, inclinometers are part of complex inertial navigation and technical diagnostic systems.
