Intermodulation - definition

Intermodulation is a non-linear phenomenon involving the formation of additional signals at new frequencies as a result of the simultaneous interaction of two or more waves of different frequencies in a non-linear electronic circuit. These frequencies are combinations of sums and differences of integer multiples of the input signals and are not present in the original signal, which can lead to distortion and interference in the transmission path.

The phenomenon of intermodulation occurs primarily in radio equipment, amplifiers, frequency mixers, filters and other components that do not behave fully linearly to the signals. In practice, lower order (e.g. third order) intermodulation products are particularly important, as they can occur close to the useful band and interfere with transmission. In wireless communication systems, intermodulation can lead to signal overlap, reduced transmission quality and degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio.

In radio engineering and telecommunications, the level of intermodulation is analysed as one of the key quality parameters for transceivers. This uses, among other things, the intermodulation factor (IP - Intermodulation Product) and the third-order crossover point (IP3), which determine the system's ability to operate with multiple signals without generating excessive distortion. Measuring and reducing intermodulation effects are essential in the design of multi-channel systems such as base stations, SDR receivers, measurement equipment or high-end audio systems.

This phenomenon is universal and can also occur in acoustics and in light technology if signals interact with elements with non-linear properties. In electronics, its presence is most often indicative of imperfect components or component overload, so one of the goals of circuit design is to minimise the effects of intermodulation in the usable range.
