A Spark Gap is an electrical power or electrotechnical component designed for the controlled jumping of an electrical spark between two electrodes, used mainly as protection against overvoltages in high-voltage systems. Its operation is based on the phenomenon of the dielectric, which is usually air or noble gas, breaking through as a result of an excess of the breakdown voltage between the electrodes. When an excessive voltage occurs, the spark gap ensures that the charge is quickly dissipated, protecting sensitive circuit components from damage.
Structurally, a spark gap consists of two or more electrodes placed at a specific distance, the size of which determines the voltage value that triggers the spark. Depending on the application, open, closed or gaseous spark gaps may be used, with closed versions filling the interior with a gas with strictly controlled dielectric properties. Spherical or cylindrical gap spark gaps, often used in laboratory systems for calibration and measurement, are also found in high voltage technology.
Spark gaps play a key role in lightning protection, distribution installations, traction systems and telecommunications and industrial power equipment. Thanks to their ability to conduct large surge currents quickly, they minimise the effects of overvoltages caused e.g. by lightning strikes, mains disturbances or electrostatic discharges. In some applications, such as spark ignition, pulse generators or lasers, spark gaps are also used as active control elements for the timing of the discharge.
The performance characteristics of a spark gap depend on its design, electrode materials, type and pressure of the filling gas and environmental conditions. Despite the development of modern surge protection technologies, such as varistors or transil diodes, spark gaps still remain an essential component in many systems due to their simplicity, reliability and high overload resistance.
