Iteration - definition

Iteration is the process of repeating a specific sequence of operations in order to get closer to an expected result, to solve a problem or to reach the next steps of data processing. The concept has applications in many fields of science and technology, particularly in mathematics, computer science, Automation and algorithmics. The iterative approach consists of successively transforming an initial state by applying the same procedure repeatedly, each successive value being derived from the previous one.

In computer science, iteration usually refers to the repetition of instructions within a programming loop, where a specific piece of code is executed repeatedly until a given logical condition is met. This can be a loop with a fixed number of repetitions or a conditional construct where the number of iterations depends on the current data. In functional terms, iteration is sometimes used as an alternative to recursion, enabling more controlled and memory-efficient processing of complex computational tasks.

In mathematics and numerical analysis, iteration forms the basis of many methods for the approximate solution of non-linear equations, optimisation or convergence analysis. Typical examples are Newton, gradient or relaxation methods, in which each successive approximation depends on the result of the previous step and approximates the solution to a certain accuracy.

In software engineering iteration also refers to the cyclical nature of the product development process - e.g. in agile methodologies (Agile), where the development of a system is done in stages, with regular review of the results and the possibility to make corrections. Iteration allows for flexible adaptation to changing requirements and faster identification and correction of errors.

Regardless of the field of application, iteration is a versatile tool for arriving at a solution incrementally, with control over the process and the ability to assess its effectiveness and accuracy.
