Jitter - definition

Jitter is the phenomenon of random or systematic deviations of a digital signal from its ideal timing. It denotes irregularities in the timing of signal edges (e.g. clock pulses, data packets, transmission Frames) relative to expected nominal positions. Jitter can occur in the form of short-term variations in the period, frequency or phase of a signal, and adversely affects synchronisation and data integrity in digital and telecommunications systems.

In clocked systems such as digital buses, clock circuits, serial transmission interfaces or audio/video systems, jitter leads to transmission errors, reduced signal quality or operational instability. In particular, its presence becomes critical in high bandwidth environments, where precise timing is essential for correct data decoding. In power electronics and Automation, jitter can also affect control systems, causing unwanted phase changes or instability in pulse waveforms.

Others can have various sources, including electromagnetic interference, thermal noise, clock source instabilities, signal transmission imperfections and propagation delays in conductors or logic components. There are variations of it, such as deterministic jitter (repetitive and predictable) and random jitter (resulting from noise), which differ in their statistical nature and impact on the system.

Measurement and analysis of jitter are carried out using eye-diagram oscilloscopes, phase-time analysers or specialised tools that test the quality of timing signals. Others methods of jitter reduction are used in digital system design, including phase filters, PLL (Phase-Locked Loop) circuits, data buffering and timing correction to maintain stability and consistency of synchronisation between system components.
