SD card - definition

The SD (Secure Digital) card is a compact Mass Storage media based on flash memory technology, designed to store and carry digital data in electronic devices. The standard was developed in 1999 by a consortium of SanDisk, Panasonic and Toshiba, and its specification defines both the physical dimensions of the card and the communication protocols and data protection mechanisms.

Memory Cards use NAND flash memory chips, working with an on-board controller that manages write, read and error correction processes through mechanisms such as ECC (Error Correction Code) and wear leveling, which extend memory life. This technology allows high capacity to be achieved while maintaining a compact size and low power consumption.

Over time, developments of the standard have been introduced, such as SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity), SDXC (Secure Digital Extended Capacity) and SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity), enabling storage of data sizes of up to several terabytes. The performance of SD cards is determined by speed classes such as Speed Class, UHS Speed Class and Video Speed Class, defining minimum guaranteed write speeds, which is important for applications requiring constant and fast data transfer, such as high-definition video recording or serial photography.

SD cards have found their way into a wide range of devices, from cameras and video cameras, to mobile phones and tablets, to drones and embedded systems. Due to their versatility, mechanical robustness and capacity scalability, Memory Cards are one of the most widely used portable memory formats in modern consumer and industrial electronics.
