A computer cluster is a set of interconnected computers (nodes) working together as a single logical unit of computing to increase processing power, reliability or service availability. The nodes of a cluster communicate with each other via a high-speed computer network and perform common tasks, operating on the basis of load sharing, redundancy or parallel processing. Unlike a single computer, a cluster enables distributed computing, which significantly increases the scalability and efficiency of the system.
Others can take different forms of cluster architecture depending on the application - from simple systems consisting of several machines to complex HPC (High Performance Computing) environments used in advanced numerical simulations, data analysis or modelling of physical phenomena. In the context of reliability, clusters are also used in HA (High Availability) type configurations, where the failure of one of the nodes does not interrupt the operation of the entire system, thanks to failover and replication mechanisms.
From the end user's point of view, the cluster behaves as a single system, although its resources are physically dispersed. The cluster management software - e.g. job queuing systems, load balancing mechanisms, resource managers - is responsible for allocating computing power, monitoring the status of nodes and communication between them. A key aspect is also the file system configuration (e.g. distributed file systems), which ensures consistent access to data across the structure.
Computer clusters are used in many areas such as scientific computing, parallel processing, machine learning, graphics rendering, database servers or enterprise-class systems. Their construction and management require expertise in operating systems, computer networks, parallel programming and infrastructure security and scalability.
