Reed Sensors - definition

The Reed Sensors is an electromechanical electrical switch, whose operation is based on the phenomenon of magnetic attraction. It consists of thin, flexible metal contacts placed inside a hermetically sealed glass tube. The contacts are made of ferromagnetic materials and, in the absence of a magnetic field, remain open or closed - depending on the design. Approaching an external magnetic field source, such as a permanent magnet or solenoids, causes them to attract and change their conductive state.

By being encapsulated in a vacuum or inert gas atmosphere, Reed Sensors have a very high mechanical durability and resistance to sparking, allowing them to be used in environments with a higher risk of ignition. The response time of Reed Sensors is short, and its design without active parts means that the device does not consume energy when at rest. Its operation is two-state, making it an ideal component for detecting the presence or position of moving parts.

Reed Sensors are used extensively in security systems, especially in door and window opening sensors, as well as in industrial automation systems, liquid flow counters, measurement systems and control devices. Due to their simplicity and high reliability, they are a competitive alternative to more complex electronic sensors, especially where a non-contact, permanent sensing solution is required.
