A Discharge Lamp is a type of electric light source in which the emission of optical radiation occurs as a result of the flow of current through a gas or metal vapour enclosed in a sealed bulb. Under the influence of an applied voltage, gas molecules are ionised, leading to the formation of an electrical discharge, emitting light with a characteristic spectrum, depending on the type of medium used.
The action of the discharge lamp is to initiate and sustain an ionised conductive channel between electrodes. Depending on the gas pressure in the bulb, a distinction is made between low-pressure and high-pressure lamps. The former are characterised by lower luminance but higher luminous efficiency, while high-pressure lamps emit more intense light with less volume. In many designs, mixtures of noble gases, mercury, sodium or metal halides are used to give the lamp specific spectral and operating properties.
Due to their high energy efficiency and long service life, discharge lamps have found widespread use in street, industrial, stadium and large area interior lighting. However, they require specialised ignition systems and current stabilisers due to their non-linear voltage-current characteristics and the need to sustain the discharge. Compared to traditional incandescent lamps, they offer significantly higher luminous efficacy, albeit with lower colour rendering and longer start-up times.
The use of discharge lamps also extends to specialised technologies such as spectral analysis, UV lighting, flash lamps in photography or light sources in microscopy. Their operation involves the emission of radiation over a wide range of the spectrum, often including the ultraviolet, which requires the use of suitable protective shields or filters.
