Solder is a metallic material used in the process of soldering, i.e. permanently joining two or more metal components by melting the solder and inserting it into the gap between the surfaces to be joined without bringing the surfaces themselves into a liquid state. The process is based on the phenomena of wetting and atomic diffusion at the interface, resulting in a strong and conductive mechanical and electrical connection.
Feet can come in various forms such as wires, rods, powders or pastes and are usually metal alloys, selected so that their melting point is sufficiently lower than the melting point of the materials being joined. Feet most commonly used include tin alloys with the addition of lead, silver, copper, bismuth or antimony, with modern technology increasingly requiring lead-free solders in response to environmental regulations such as the RoHS directive.
In electronics, solder has a key function in the assembly of components on printed circuit boards (PCBs), where it provides both mechanical fixation of components, and reliable electrical current flow. In industrial applications and piping, brazing is used, characterised by higher operating temperatures and greater mechanical strength. Fluxes are often used to improve the quality of the solder joint, removing oxides from the metal surface and improving wetting properties, minimising the risk of voids and other defects in the weld.
The physicochemical parameters of the solder, such as melting point, electrical conductivity, resistance to corrosion and mechanical properties, are critical to ensure the long-term reliability and durability of solder joints, especially in systems operating in harsh environments or subject to varying mechanical and thermal stresses.
