Machometer - definition

A Machometer is a measuring instrument used to determine the Mach number, which is the ratio of the speed of an object moving in a gas - most commonly air - to the local speed of sound. This value is crucial in aerodynamics, ballistics and aeronautical engineering, where it allows the classification of the speed of motion in relation to sound barriers and the evaluation of airflow phenomena around an object.

The machometer's operation is based on the measurement of pressures characteristic of gas flow - total and static - using appropriately placed probes such as Pitot tubes. From the thermodynamic relations of perfect gases and Bernoulli's law, it is possible to determine the Mach number in real time. This instrument can exist as a stand-alone device or as part of an integrated avionics system, which additionally takes into account corrections related to flight altitude and atmospheric conditions.

Machometers are mainly used in supersonic and supersonic aviation, where precise knowledge of the Mach number makes it possible to control the state of airflow, avoid or exploit shock waves, and adjust engine and control system performance. In modern aerospace systems, these instruments are usually digital and linked to other measurement sensors to form complex navigation and diagnostic systems.

From an engineering point of view, the accuracy and stability of machometer readings depend on the correct representation of gas-dynamic models and the quality of the measurement path. Of particular importance is its use in the acceleration, manoeuvring and flight phases of the transonic regime, where small differences in Mach number can significantly affect aerodynamics and flight safety.
