Karnaugh method - definition

The Karnaugh Method is a graphical technique for simplifying logic functions, used in the design of digital circuits. It allows the number of variables and Boolean operations in Boolean expressions to be reduced without changing their functionality. It is mainly used to minimise functions expressed as sum of products (SOP) or product of sums (POS), which translates into simplified logic diagrams, reduced number of gates and increased efficiency of digital circuits.

The method is based on so-called Karnaugh maps - two-dimensional arrays in which the cells represent possible combinations of values of the input variables of a logic function. Each cell corresponds to one function value (usually 0 or 1) assigned to a particular minterm or macterm. The order of the rows and columns in the map corresponds to Gray's code, ensuring that neighbouring cells differ by only one variable, which is crucial for grouping.

The simplification process involves finding groups of adjacent cells containing logical values of 1 (or 0 - depending on the output form), which can be combined into rectangular blocks of a size that is a power of two. Each such group corresponds to a simplified component of a logical expression, in which variables that do not affect the logical result in the given range are omitted.

The Karnaugh method is particularly useful when analysing functions with a small number of variables (usually up to six), as with larger numbers the maps become too complex and difficult to use effectively. However, it is a fundamental teaching tool in teaching the basics of digital design and is the starting point for more advanced optimisation techniques, such as the Quine-McCluskey algorithm or automatic logic synthesis in Tools CAD.
