MMIC (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit) is a monolithic integrated circuit operating in the microwave frequency range, typically from a few MHz to hundreds of GHz. Unlike traditional electronic circuits, an MMIC integrates all active and passive components - such as Transistors, Resistors, Capacitors or transmission lines - into a single semiconductor structure, typically made of Gallium Arsenide (GaAs), Gallium Nitride (GaN) or Indium Phosphide (InP). These semiconductor materials exhibit better high-frequency properties than silicon, making them more effective in microwave applications.
MMIC technology is used in satellite communication systems, radars, RF transmitters and receivers, military equipment and wireless telecommunications. Thanks to its compact design, high reliability and repeatable performance, MMICs enable miniature and efficient RF circuits with a very wide bandwidth.
The MMIC design and fabrication process is similar to microelectronic technologies, but requires specialised simulation tools and precise control of geometrical parameters and material properties. Optimising impedance matching and minimising propagation losses in the millimetre-wave range are crucial. Due to high-frequency operation, designers must take into account phenomena such as electromagnetic coupling, phase delays or parasitic effects.
The MMIC is an essential component of modern RF and microwave systems, especially where high integration density, temperature stability and high output power are required while miniaturising the circuit.
