MSA (Measurement System Analysis) is a methodical approach used in quality engineering to assess the precision, accuracy and reliability of measurement systems used in production and control processes. In the context of statistical process control (SPC), MSA makes it possible to identify and quantify sources of variance introduced into measurements that are not directly related to the product under test, but are due to limitations of the measurement system itself.
The measurement system is understood as the total combination of Measuring Tools, software, operators, procedures and the environment in which the measurement is carried out. The MSA analysis assesses its ability to generate reliable and statistically significant data. The key parameters to be analysed are repeatability, reproducibility, stability, linearity and bias, i.e. systematic deviation from a reference value.
One of the most commonly used tools in Measuring Tools Analysis (MSA) is the Gage R&R (Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility) study, which allows the contribution of measurement system variability to the total process variability to be estimated. Performing an MSA analysis is indispensable in the context of validating measurement methods, meeting the requirements of quality standards (e.g. IATF 16949) and ensuring consistency of measurement results in batch and inter-plant production. The application of MSA also allows calibration needs to be identified, measurement errors to be eliminated and decisions to be made regarding the qualification of measurement equipment.
Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
