Multiplexer (MUX) is a digital or analogue circuit used to select one signal from multiple inputs and transmit it to a common output, depending on the logic state of the control lines. It acts as a selector, allowing data from different sources to be transmitted over a single transmission medium, making efficient use of system resources and simplifying electronic circuit architecture.
In digital electronics, multiplexers are used as logic elements in control systems, data switching and the implementation of logical and arithmetic functions. They operate by decoding a control signal that indicates which input will be connected to the output. In practice, the number of inputs is a power of two and the number of address lines determines how many bits are needed to select a particular channel.
In transmission systems multiplexing allows multiple signals to be transmitted over a single communication channel by separating them in the time, frequency, wavelength or code domains. This approach is used in telecommunications, data transmission, fibre optic systems and Computer Networks, among others. In this form, the multiplexer acts as a device that aggregates signals and allows them to be transmitted together and subsequently separated in a demultiplexer.
The construction and implementation of a multiplexer can be realised using logic gates, Programmable circuits (e.g. FPGAs) or as off-the-shelf integrated components. Depending on the intended use, the circuit can be adapted to work with binary, analogue or mixed signals. Multiplexers are the foundation of many digital and Automation systems, where flexible and dynamic control of information flow is required.
