Negawatt - definition

A Negawatt is a term used in energy engineering and energy demand management to refer to the amount of electricity that has not been consumed due to the implementation of efficiency or conservation measures. The term, proposed by Amory Lovins, is the conceptual opposite of a megawatt (MW) - a unit of power - and does not refer to the production of energy, but to its avoided consumption. In this view, a negawatt can be interpreted as a virtual energy source that is created by reducing demand rather than meeting it.

From a technical and economic point of view, negawatts are considered the most cost-effective form of 'generating' power, as reducing energy demand by upgrading infrastructure, using energy-efficient equipment, automating processes or optimising consumption management avoids investment in new generation sources and transmission infrastructure. Negawatts are also an important component of climate and energy transition policies, as they directly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing network losses and increasing energy security.

In engineering practice, the measurement of negawatts is implemented by modelling reference scenarios of energy consumption and analysing the differences resulting from implemented efficiency measures. From a system perspective, negawatts can be incorporated into market mechanisms, e.g. demand reduction auctions or Demand Side Management (DSM) programmes, where they are treated equivalently to conventional megawatts in the context of power system balancing.
