Rivets - definition

Rivets is a fastener used in assembly techniques to permanently join materials by plastic deformation. Its working principle is based on mechanical swelling of the shank end, which leads to a high-strength, inseparable joint. Rivets are designed with a cylindrical shank and a head moulded in the production process, the geometry of which determines the way in which it is embedded in the material and the strength properties of the joint.

Classical riveted joints use solid rivets, which require access from both sides of the components to be joined. Rivets are installed by inserting the rivet into a drilled hole and plastically deforming the free end using hand or Pneumatic Tools. Rivets are used for one-sided connections, consisting of a core and a tubular sleeve whose expansion occurs when the mandrel is broken in a controlled manner. Developments in metal joining technology have led to the development of structural rivets with increased load-bearing capacity and specialised versions, such as tubular, hollow or expandable rivets, designed for applications requiring weight reduction and minimising the impact of assembly stresses.

Rivets material is selected according to the mechanical load, resistance to corrosion and compatibility with the materials to be joined, which is crucial in aerospace engineering, automotive and steel construction. Feet of aluminium, stainless steel, copper and titanium are the most commonly used, with the use of anti-corrosion coatings or anodising techniques in structures with higher requirements. Modern assembly technologies include the use of robotic riveting, allowing high repeatability of the process and precise control of deposition parameters, which is used in the mass production of structural components.

The properties of the riveted joint are determined by the shear and axial forces transmitted through the deformed material, making this type of joint highly resistant to varying dynamic loads. In structures exposed to high stresses hot riveting techniques are used, allowing controlled expansion of the rivet in the hole and eliminating assembly play. Modern applications also use Rivets equipped with mounting indicators to verify correct installation and quality control during the production cycle.
