Optoelectronics - definition

Optoelectronics is an interdisciplinary field of science and technology concerned with the study, design and application of devices and systems that exploit the phenomena associated with the interaction of light and electromagnetic radiation with semiconductor matter. It encompasses the processes of converting light energy into electrical signals and vice versa, as well as the transmission of information using light. It is based on the laws of solid state physics, electrodynamics and quantum mechanics.

The main application areas of Optoelectronics include light-emitting devices such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), semiconductor lasers or coherent light sources, as well as radiation detectors, e.g. Photodiodes, Phototransistors or CCD arrays and CMOS. Optical coupling elements such as Optocouplers, which enable non-contact transmission of electrical signals using light, also play an important role. In telecommunications technologies, Optoelectronics is the basis for the operation of optical fibres and high bandwidth optical transmission systems.

The technology is used in a wide range of fields - from the electronics industry and Automation, through medicine to military systems, sensors and information technology. With advances in miniaturisation and integration, optoelectronic circuits are being developed in the form of integrated circuits, allowing complex light detection, processing and emission systems to be created in a single chip. Of particular importance here is the development of integrated photonics, in which optical and electronic components work together at the microscale level.

Optoelectronics combines the physical properties of semiconductor materials with controlled emission and absorption processes of photons to create advanced measurement, communication and information technologies. Its development is driven by the need to increase data transmission rates, measurement accuracy and energy efficiency of devices.
