PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) - definition

PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) is a communication bus developed in the 1990s by Intel to connect peripherals to the computer motherboard. It is an internal interface standard for connecting add-in cards such as graphics cards, sound cards, network cards and disk controllers, giving them fast access to system resources.

The PCI architecture is based on parallel data transfer and typically operates in 32-bit mode, although there have also been 64-bit versions. It communicates at a clock speed of usually 33 or 66 MHz, which, with a standard bus width, allowed bandwidths of the order of hundreds of megabytes per second to be achieved. The interface was designed to be processor-independent, meaning that its operation was not strictly tied to a particular CPU architecture, which facilitated integration into a variety of computer systems.

PCI supports autoconfiguration mechanisms (known as plug and play) so that devices could be detected and configured automatically by the operating system. Each device connected to the bus receives its own address space, allowing direct access to its control registers and memory. The standard also defines communication protocols, control signals and how bus access is arbitrated.

As technology has evolved and the demand for higher bandwidths has increased, classic PCI has gradually been replaced by newer solutions such as PCI-X and PCI Express (PCIe), which uses a serial data transfer architecture and allows much greater scalability and performance. Nevertheless, the PCI interface has played an important role in the development of modern personal computers, being the industry standard for add-in cards for many years.
