PCMCIA - definition
The PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) is an expansion card interface standard developed for mobile computers that defines both the physical design of the cards and the communication protocols between the card and the system. The technology was introduced in the early 1990s by an organisation of the same name for computer and peripheral equipment manufacturers. Its aim was to create a universal, compact solution to extend the functionality of mobile computers.
PCMCIA cards, also known as PC Cards, resembled flat credit cards in appearance and size, and were equipped with a 68-pin connector, allowing direct connection to a special slot in a laptop. The standard provided for three types of card, differing mainly in thickness, to support a variety of devices from flash memory and modems to network adapters, SCSI interfaces, disk controllers and I/O extensions.
PCMCIA technology was based on the ISA bus and later also PCI, offering automatic discovery and configuration mechanisms (Plug and Play), which greatly simplified hardware installation. As technology evolved and the demand for higher bandwidth, the standard evolved into CardBus, a 32-bit version of PCMCIA, electrically compatible with the PCI bus, and ExpressCard, based on PCI Express and USB.
PCMCIA has played an important role in the history of mobile computing development, enabling it to be flexibly adapted to different tasks without the need for external peripherals. Although it has been superseded in newer designs by more compact and faster solutions such as USB or integrated internal modules, for many years it has been the standard method of extending the capabilities of notebooks and mobile terminals.
