PGA (Programmable-Gain Amplifier) is an amplifier with programmable gain, whose input signal amplification level can be dynamically changed depending on the control signal. This type of device is an important part of the analogue path in Data Acquisition Systems, signal processing and in applications requiring adaptive signal level adjustment for further processing, e.g. by analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs).
A key feature of the PGA is the ability to select from a number of predefined gain levels, typically via digital control via interfaces such as SPI, I²C or parallel logic buses. The gain can be changed both statically (before measurements are taken) and dynamically (during system operation), allowing for compensation for varying measurement conditions, optimisation of the input signal range and improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio.
PGA amplifiers are often designed as monolithic elements in an integrated circuit structure and can integrate additional functions such as input filters, surge protection, offset compensation or auto-calibration. As a result, they are used in measurement systems, sensors, signal conditioning systems, medical and industrial equipment, as well as audio and communication devices.
The characteristics of PGAs include wide bandwidth, low noise floor, high linearity and low temperature drift, enabling their use in high-precision applications. In the context of interfacing with an ADC, proper gain setting allows the maximum use of the dynamic range of the converter, which directly affects the quality and accuracy of the digitisation of the analogue signal. Designing systems with PGAs requires consideration of input impedance, propagation delay and possible interference from the digital control path.
