Pirometers - definition

A Pirometers is a non-contact measuring device designed to determine the temperature of bodies by analysing the electromagnetic radiation emitted by their surface. It works on the basis of the law of thermal radiation, which relates the temperature of a body to its emissivity and the wavelength of the emitted radiation, according to the principles of blackbody physics. In practice, measurement is based on the detection of infrared radiation, in the wavelength range typically from 0.7 to 20 micrometres, using optoelectronic transducers such as thermal or photon detectors.

Advanced pyrometers can be equipped with radiation focusing optics, material emissivity correction systems, and digital interfaces for integration with industrial automation systems, PLC Drivers or SCADA systems. Their applications include high-temperature environments and extreme conditions where direct contact with the measuring object would be hazardous or technically impossible, such as in the metallurgy, glass industry, foundry or heat treatment lines.

Others have pyrometers in single and dual colour versions (ratio pyrometers) due to different application requirements, the latter allowing precise measurement under conditions of variable emissivity and partial obscuration of the object. There are also models with a laser or optical aiming function, making it easier to determine the exact point of measurement.
