PLD - definition

PLD (Programmable Logic Device) is a category of digital integrated circuits whose logic functionality can be defined by the user after manufacture. These circuits contain matrices of logic gates and interconnects that can be programmed to perform specific logic functions such as combinational operations, sequential operations, control circuits or protocol conversion. PLDs provide a flexible solution in the design of digital systems, enabling the rapid implementation of complex functions without the need to design specialised circuits (ASICs).

The basic PLD architecture is based on a grid of logical cells or blocks, which can be connected by programmable paths. The programming of the circuit involves defining the configuration of these blocks and their interconnections, which is done using hardware description languages (HDL) such as VHDL or Verilog, and then implemented using specialised software tools.

Others include different classes of PLDs, including PAL (Programmable Array Logic), GAL (Generic Array Logic), CPLD (Complex PLD) and FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array). The different types differ in the number of logic resources available, programming method, performance and level of integration. CPLDs offer moderate complexity and good latency predictability, while FPGAs enable the implementation of very complex digital systems, including multi-core processors and systems SoC.

PLDs are used in a wide range of fields - from digital circuit prototyping, consumer, industrial and automotive electronics to aerospace, military and medical systems. Their advantage is the ability to update hardware functionality after deployment, which supports flexible design, rapid patching and adaptation of devices to changing functional requirements and standards. Depending on the technology, PLDs can be one-time programmable (OTP), electrically erasable (EEPROM/Flash) or dynamically reconfigurable.
