Load pump - definition

The Charge Pump is a type of voltage converter in which the change in voltage level is achieved using only capacitive components - Capacitors - and electronic switches, without the need for inductive switches. The principle of the charge pump is to periodically charge and switch Capacitors in such a way as to transfer an electrical charge between different points in the circuit, leading to a change in the output voltage relative to the input voltage.

Circuits of this type can be used to raise (step-up), lower (step-down) or reverse the polarity of the supply voltage. The process is usually implemented by generating an appropriate sequence of control pulses that control the state of electronic switches (e.g. MOSFET transistors), causing the charge to cycle through the capacitors. Capacitors are charged during one phase of the cycle and discharged to a different potential level during the next phase, allowing a new output voltage to be formed.

The advantage of charge pumps is their simple design, small size and ability to integrate with Integrated circuits without the need for Inductive Components, making them ideal for space-constrained applications and low-power systems. In practice, they are used in portable devices, non-volatile memories (EEPROM, Flash), RTC clocks, sensors and microcontrollers where additional auxiliary voltages are required.

Although the efficiency of charge pumps may be lower than that of Blocking reactor-based boost converters, their high integration and simplicity make them widely used where low energy losses are acceptable and size, cost and reliability are key. Designing charge pumps requires consideration of parameters such as switching frequency, Capacitors capacitances, switch resistances and output current requirements.
