An Electron Multiplier is a vacuum or semiconductor electronic device used to detect and amplify very weak electrical signals by cascade multiplication of the number of electrons. It works on the principle of secondary electron emission, a phenomenon where additional electrons are knocked off the surface of an electrode by an incident electron primary electron with sufficient kinetic energy.
Structurally, a classical electron multiplier consists of a series of electrodes called dynodes, arranged in a vacuum bubble. Each dynode is at an increasing positive voltage relative to the previous one. An electron striking the first dynode causes the emission of several secondary electrons, which are accelerated and directed to the next dynode, where the process repeats. After passing through the entire chain of secondary emission stages, the number of electrons can increase by up to a million times that of the primary signal.
Electron duplicators are used wherever detection of very weak signals such as single photons, elementary particles or ionising radiation is required. They are commonly used in photomultipliers, scintillation detectors, electron microscopy, mass spectrometry and high energy physics experiments. In Optoelectronics, they act as input elements in precision measurement systems.
Modern equivalents of classical duplicators include channel duplicators (channeltrons) and semiconductor multipliers, which offer smaller size, greater mechanical robustness and the ability to operate in integrated circuits. Despite advances in technology, electron duplicators retain a vital role in applications requiring superior sensitivity, low noise and reliable operation in extreme environmental conditions.
