Multipath propagation - definition

Multipath propagation is a phenomenon occurring during the transmission of electromagnetic waves in which the signal reaches the receiver via many different paths simultaneously. The individual paths may be created by reflections from buildings, the ground surface, water or other obstacles, as well as by refraction or diffraction. As a result, the receiver registers several versions of the same signal, which differ in arrival time, phase, amplitude and angle of incidence.

This phenomenon is important in radio communication systems, especially in urban, industrial or indoor environments where the presence of numerous obstacles favours propagation path splitting. Multipath can lead to constructive or destructive interference between signals, resulting in signal fading, spectrum distortion or degradation of transmission quality. In digital systems, there can also be an effect called inter-symbol interference (ISI), i.e. overlapping symbols, which makes it difficult to read the data correctly.

Despite the negative effects, multipath propagation can also be used beneficially, e.g. in MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technologies, which process multipath signals to increase throughput and transmission reliability. Multipath propagation analysis plays a key role in the design of antenna systems, wireless networks and radio signal-based location technologies. Consideration of its characteristics is essential to ensure the stability and efficiency of transmission under varying propagation conditions.
