Voltage booster converter (boost converter) - definition

A Boost Converter (boost Converter) is a type of power electronic DC-DC converter designed to increase the DC voltage from the input level to a higher voltage at the output. This type of circuit is widely used in power electronics, battery systems, the automotive industry and also in renewable energy, particularly in photovoltaic applications.

The principle of the boost converter is based on the cyclic storage of energy in the magnetic field of an inductive coil during the conduction of a switching element (usually a transistor) and its transfer to the load when the transistor is switched off. During the off phase, the energy stored in the coil attaches to the source voltage, causing the voltages to add up and produce a higher level at the output. Control is usually by pulse width modulation (PWM), which allows the output voltage to be precisely regulated.

A characteristic feature of a boost converter is that the output voltage is always higher than the input voltage, but in practice this relationship is limited by the power efficiency internal resistances and the operating range of the power components. In typical applications, voltage ripple filtering, overcurrent protection and dynamic parameter control are also taken into account to ensure stable operation.

In advanced designs, boost converters can be integrated with other DC-DC circuit topologies to achieve a wider voltage regulation range, higher efficiency or protection functions. The design of such systems requires consideration of many factors, including the nature of the load, electromagnetic interference and thermal requirements.
