Pyrgeometer - definition

The pyrgeometer is a specialised measuring instrument for recording longwave radiation in the infrared range, emitted by the atmosphere, clouds and earth surfaces. Unlike the pyranometer, which measures total solar (shortwave) radiation, the pyrgeometer is designed to analyse the heat balance in the thermal radiation range, typically between 4.5 and 50 micrometres. This parameter is crucial in climate research, meteorology and energy analysis of systems related to heat transfer.

The operation of the pyrgeometer is based on measuring the thermal energy flux reaching the detector, which is covered with a black coating that absorbs radiation in the long-wave range. The detector, usually in the form of a thermoelectric element or bolometer, records the temperature difference between its surface and a reference body of known temperature. The resulting voltage signal is proportional to the difference between the incident and radiated radiation from the instrument itself, requiring the device's own thermal emission to be taken into account in the final calculations.

To ensure measurement accuracy and to eliminate the influence of short-wave radiation, the pyrgeometer is equipped with a spectral filter or optical dome that selectively transmits only radiation from the selected wavelength range. The dome also protects the sensitive elements from the effects of atmospheric conditions such as wind, humidity or precipitation. More advanced models use active systems to control internal temperature and compensation algorithms to increase precision.

Pyrgeometers are used, among other things, in systems for assessing the Earth's energy balance, in climate models, in measurements of radiative losses during nocturnal heat radiation and in studies of the influence of atmospheric conditions on energy exchange between the surface and the atmosphere. The importance of these measurements is growing with the need to accurately monitor processes related to climate change and the energy efficiency of the built environment.
