QWERTY (programmer's keyboard) is the most widely used alphanumeric keyboard layout, named after the first six letters arranged in the top left row of letter keys. It was designed by Christopher Latham Sholes in the 19th century for typewriters, with the intention of minimising mechanical locking of the levers by properly arranging the most frequently used letters. Today, the QWERTY layout, with adaptations for English and other languages, is standard in personal computers, laptops and mobile devices.
In the context of the so-called 'programmer's keyboard', the term refers to a QWERTY layout adapted to the specific needs of users involved in programming. A programmer's keyboard typically includes full access to special characters relevant to coding, such as parentheses, brackets, semicolons, logical operators or question marks, in a layout that allows fast and ergonomic input source code. In many operating systems, 'programmer's keyboard' refers to a variant of QWERTY in which diacritical characters are accessed through key combinations, allowing seamless switching between encoding and natural text input.
Technically, the Keypads of the programmer supports the extended layouts ASCII and Unicode, allowing free support for multiple character encoding standards, which is indispensable when working in an international software environment. The ergonomics of the QWERTY layout, despite numerous alternatives such as Dvorak or Colemak, remains the dominant choice due to well-established user habits and ubiquity in hardware and system solutions.
