Knurling Knurling is a process of plastic or mechanical treatment of a surface, which consists in producing a regular pattern on the material in the form of a grid, grooves or serrations, usually of a decorative, functional or technological nature. This operation is mainly carried out on lathes using special tools called knurls, which, thanks to their structure, allow the pattern to be pressed into the machined surface as a result of the pressure and rotary movement of the workpiece.

The purpose of knurling is usually to increase surface adhesion, which is important for hand-gripped components such as knobs, handles, knobs or tool handles. In industrial applications, knurling also improves friction, enabling more efficient transmission of forces in friction joints. The process is used both in mass production and in the precision manufacture of individual parts in precision mechanics, measuring instruments or electronic device components.

Parameters for knurling, such as the angle of the notches, the depth of the pattern, the type of mesh (straight, cross or oblique) and the spacing of the teeth, are selected individually depending on the functional and aesthetic requirements. High-quality knurling requires consideration of the properties of the workpiece material in order to avoid excessive crushing, cracking or surface distortion. In industrial practice, this process can be implemented either by pressing the knurl into the material (static knurling) or by rolling it over the workpiece surface (rotary knurling), which reduces the load on the tool and improves the quality of the pattern.

In modern manufacturing technologies, knurling has also found application as a method of surface preparation for adhesive or soldering processes, where the microstructure of the pattern improves adhesion of the weld to the substrate. Automation of knurling processes within CNC systems enables precise pattern reproduction on components with complex shapes, maintaining high repeatability and quality control, which is particularly important in the production of aerospace, medical and micro-engineering components.
