Voltage Regulators are electronic or electromechanical systems designed to maintain a stable output voltage regardless of variations in input voltage, load or environmental conditions. It is commonly used in power systems, both in electronic devices and in power installations, where it ensures the quality of the voltage supplied to loads.
Essentially, a voltage regulator compares the current voltage value with a reference value and, based on this, adjusts the system's operating parameters to maintain a set output level. Others implement this function in different ways, depending on the technology and application - in the form of linear regulators, pulse regulators (converters), digital or analogue regulators, and using controlled transformers.
In electronic devices, the voltage regulator provides a stable power supply to sensitive components such as microcontrollers, sensors, communication systems or amplifiers. In electrical power systems, it is responsible for maintaining the voltage parameters in the network, counteracting voltage dips or rises that may result from load fluctuations or changes in generator operating conditions.
Others, depending on the design, regulators can offer different characteristics such as speed of response, control accuracy, energy efficiency, operating voltage range and noise immunity. In power system design, it is crucial to select the right type of regulator for the application requirements - taking into account the nature of the load, voltage tolerance and environmental operating conditions. In many cases, voltage regulators are also equipped with protection features such as protection against overheating, short-circuit or exceeding the allowable current.
