Reostat - definition

The rheostat is an adjustable resistor with a variable resistance value, used in electrical and electronic systems to control current and regulate voltage in direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) circuits. Its operation is based on Ohm's principle, according to which a change in resistance results in a modification of the current flow in the circuit, which is used in load control, parameter control of electric motors and in laboratory systems requiring precise adjustment of electrical values.

The design of the rheostat includes a conductive resistive element made of materials with high thermal stability and low temperature coefficient, such as nickel-chromium alloys, manganese or Constantan. A slide or slider mechanically moved across the surface of the resistive path changes the effective circuit length, which affects the electrical resistance value at a given control point. Depending on the design, rheostats can be in wire, film or liquid form, where the conducting medium is electrolyte with an adjustable conduction path length.

High-power systems use air- or liquid-cooled rheostats to dissipate the heat generated by the Joule effect and maintain stable operating conditions. Control mechanisms can use either manual knob control or remote mechanical or electronic control systems for automated applications.

Rheostats are a key component in applications requiring smooth current control, such as brightness control of lighting, speed control of DC motors and compensation for changes in load resistance in metering systems. In power systems, they are used as start-up resistors in high-power motors and as damping elements in dynamic braking systems. In modern applications, their function is increasingly being taken over by solid-state controllers such as PWM controllers or transistor power controllers, but rheostats are still used where a simple, reliable and mechanically robust control solution is required.
