RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) is a processor architecture based on a simplified and optimised instruction set, designed to maximise the efficiency of program execution while simplifying the control system of the central processing unit. The RISC concept assumes that most of the processor's operations can be implemented using simple, single-cycle instructions that run quickly and predictably.
In RISC architecture, instructions are generally of uniform length and operate mainly on internal registers, with limited access to operational memory, realised by clearly separated load and write operations. Such a model facilitates instruction decoding and allows efficient use of pipelined processing (pipelining), in which the various stages of instruction execution are carried out in parallel, increasing the overall throughput of the processor.
RISC was developed as an alternative to more complex CISC (Complex Instruction Set Computing) architectures, which offer greater variety and functionality of individual instructions, but at the cost of hardware complexity and less predictability of execution times. In the RISC approach, simplification of the hardware allows it to be optimised in terms of clock frequency, silicon area and power consumption.
RISC-based architectures are widely used in embedded systems, mobile devices, microcontrollers and modern integrated circuits where energy efficiency and deterministic response times are important. Examples of popular RISC processor families include ARM, MIPS, RISC-V and SPARC. Due to their scalability and open specification, RISC architectures support the development of modern computer systems and are an essential part of modern microprocessor engineering.
