A commutator motor is a type of electric motor in which the change of current direction in the rotor windings is realised by means of a mechanical commutator - an annular assembly of brushes and copper segments. This design makes it possible to operate both on direct current (DC) , and - in the case of some versions - alternating current (AC), making commutator motors versatile in variable load applications.
In the classic commutator motor system, the rotor has windings through which current flows, supplied by brushes pressed against a rotating commutator. The interaction of the magnetic field of the stator with the currents in the rotor windings results in an electrodynamic force that generates torque. The role of the commutator is to cycle the winding circuits so that the torque remains in line with the direction of rotation, regardless of the position of the rotor.
The advantage of commutator motors is their ability to achieve high starting torque and the ease of speed control by varying the supply voltage. Due to these properties, they are often used in portable appliances, power tools, household appliances and applications with high dynamic requirements. The universal (AC/DC) versions allow operation with alternating voltage, which simplifies the design of household appliances and power tools.
However, mechanical commutation is also associated with certain limitations - notably brush wear and sparking on the commutator, which affects durability and can generate electromagnetic interference. For this reason, they are increasingly being replaced in modern systems by brushless electronically commutated Actuators. Nevertheless, commutator motors remain popular in many applications due to their simplicity, low production costs and wide range of applications.
