Sonic motor - definition

Sonic motor is a mechanical device in which the energy of a sound wave is used to generate motion or torque. The operating principle of this type of motor is based on the use of acoustic phenomena, such as resonance or acoustic radiation pressure, to induce movement of internal components or to transfer energy to the working medium. Unlike classical electromagnetic, combustion or hydraulic engines, the sonic engine does not use a magnetic field, fuel combustion or fluid pressure, but rather precisely controlled mechanical vibrations in the acoustic frequency range or ultrasonic.

The most common case of practical application of this principle is the so-called ultrasonic motors, which operate on the basis of piezoelectric effects. In such structures, very high-frequency vibration waves are generated, which induce micro-motion on the surface of the vibrating element. This motion can be converted into linear or rotational displacement by means of appropriate mechanical coupling, allowing very precise control of position or speed. These types of motors exhibit high responsiveness and low-noise operation and are therefore used, among others, in precision optical mechanisms, micro-robotics, medicine and Automation systems, where small size, lack of lubrication and fast response are key.

Although the term 'sonic motor' may have broader, theoretical overtones and is also sometimes used in conceptual or experimental contexts, e.g. in research into non-contact material transport, in technical practice it mainly refers to devices operating in the ultrasonic range and using acoustic waves as the main source of operating power.
