Soft start - definition

Soft start is a technique for controlling the start-up of electrical equipment by gradually increasing the supply voltage or current to allow a softer start-up of the load, usually an electric motor. The aim of this method is to reduce the current and mechanical surges that occur when the full voltage supply is directly switched on, which can lead to overloads, excessive wear on components or interference with the power grid.

In practice, soft start is implemented using specialised electronics, such as Thyristors or power transistors, which modulate the output voltage in a controlled manner. The parameters of the start-up process - duration, voltage ramp-up speed or starting torque limit - are adapted to the characteristics of the device and the application requirements. The operation of the system can also include control of coasting or soft stop, increasing its usefulness in applications requiring precise and safe energy management.

Soft start is mainly used in Actuators induction motors, pumps, fans, compressors and wherever dynamic loads can affect the durability of the mechanics or the stability of the mains supply. Compared to direct start systems or those using starting transformers, soft start technology offers greater flexibility and improved performance, without the need for mechanical components. In modern installations, it is often integrated into Automation systems, enabling remote management and diagnostics of the start-up process.
