Solenoid - definition
Coils is an electromagnetic element consisting of a coil conductor, usually wound in the shape of a cylinder, through which an electric current flows to produce a controlled magnetic field. In technical applications, the term usually refers to a linear solenoids, in which the action of a magnetic field induces the movement of a ferromagnetic core along the axis of the coil. Such a mechanism converts electrical energy into mechanical motion, which is used in a variety of control systems and Automation.
The operation of the solenoid is based on the laws of electromagnetism, mainly Ampère's rule and Faraday's law. When a current flows through the winding, a magnetic field is created with an axial direction inside the Coils, the intensity of which depends on the number of windings, the current intensity and the length of the winding. The presence of a moving core made of a material with high magnetic permeability allows this field to be focused and amplified, resulting in a force attracting it to the inside of the coil. This process is used in electromagnetic actuators to realise rectilinear motion.
Solenoids are commonly used in solenoid valves, relays, locking mechanisms, pneumatic and hydraulic devices and precision metering systems. With their simple design, fast response and ability to be easily controlled electrically, they enable electrical systems to be effectively combined with mechanics. Depending on application requirements, they can be designed for continuous or pulsed operation and can be equipped with feedback functions for position or force control.
