SSI (Small Scale Integration) - definition

SSI (Small Scale Integration) is a term referring to an early stage in the development of integrated circuits technology where a single chip contained a small number of logic gates or electronic components, usually not exceeding a few dozen components. This technology was widely used in the 1960s and 1970s and played a key role in the miniaturisation of electronic circuits, replacing elaborate systems based on discrete components.

Flip-Flops circuits were mainly used to implement simple logic functions such as basic AND, OR, NOT operations, as well as to build flip-flops, counters or registers. Despite their limited complexity, they enabled the creation of more compact, power-efficient and reliable digital systems than earlier solutions based on through-hole assembly. SSI formed the basis for the development of more advanced levels of integration, such as MSI (Medium Scale Integration), LSI (Large Scale Integration) or VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration), which enabled the realisation of complex processors, controllers and memories.

In the context of today's technologies, SSI is no longer applicable to large scale integration projects, but it is still sometimes used in education and in circuits that require very simple and easy to analyse logic solutions. The term also remains relevant in the analysis of the historical development of microelectronics and in the classification of the degree of integration of integrated circuits according to the number of logic functions realised on a single chip.

Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation. The catalog includes over 1,500,000 products from 1,300 leading manufacturers. TME’s modern logistics centers in Łódź and Rzgów (Poland), with a combined area of over 40,000 m², ship nearly 6,000 packages daily to customers in more than 150 countries.

TME also invests in the development of knowledge and skills of young engineers and electronics enthusiasts through the TME Education project, and supports the tech community by organizing the TechMasterEvent series, promoting innovation and experience exchange.
