Stereophony - definition
Stereophony is a sound recording, processing and reproduction technique that aims to create the impression of a spatial distribution of sound sources in an acoustic field. It is based on the use of two independent audio channels - left and right - which are recorded or generated taking into account the phase, time and amplitude differences between the signals reaching each ear. Thanks to these differences, the recipient's brain interprets the position of the sounds in space, allowing the illusion of depth and directionality to be achieved.
In practice, stereophony is used in audio systems, television, radio broadcasting, film, computer games and virtual reality. Stereophonic recording can be achieved using pairs of microphones set up according to specific spatial techniques, such as XY, AB or ORTF configurations, which model the way human ears perceive sound waves. During playback, each channel is routed to a separate speaker or headphone, which reproduces the intended soundstage.
Stereophony differs from monophonic sound, which conveys a signal from a single point with no representation of space, and from multi-channel systems (e.g. surround), which offer more complex sound immersion with multiple source directions. Although stereo technology is limited to two channels, it is sufficient for a realistic rendering of the acoustic panorama and remains the basic standard in most home and professional audio systems. However, its effectiveness depends on the correct placement of the drivers and acoustics of the room, which affect the subjective perception of spatiality.
