Controllers - definition

Controllers are a device or logic module used to supervise and control the operation of a technical system on the basis of a specified algorithm of operation. Its primary function is to process input signals - from sensors, buttons or communication interfaces - and to generate output signals that control the operation of actuators such as motors, valves, relays or displays.

Controllers can take the form of both simple electronic circuits based on digital logic and complex microprocessor units or programmable logic controllers (PLCs). In Automation systems, they play a key role in the management of production processes, machine movements, safety systems and diagnostics. Their operation is based on cyclic analysis of the state of the inputs, processing data according to set logical or mathematical rules and updating the output signals that affect the controlled object.

Depending on the architecture and application, the controller can be stand-alone or integrated into a superordinate management system. It can support timing logic, feedback, analogue and digital processing, and communicate with other devices using data transmission standards such as Modbus, CAN, Ethernet or IO-Link. Key features of the controllers include reliability, deterministic operation and real-time capability, which is essential for many industrial and process applications.

The term 'controller' can also be used in the context of software - as driver - denoting then a program that mediates between the operating system and the computer hardware. In this sense, the driver is responsible for the correct interpretation and handling of control signals sent to physical devices such as graphics cards, USB interfaces or measuring devices.

Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
