Contactors is an electromechanical switching apparatus designed to remotely switch on, off and control electrical circuits, especially in high current or high voltage systems. It works on the principle of an electromagnet which, when voltage is applied to the coil, generates a magnetic field that attracts the jumper, causing the set of operating contacts to close or open. When the coils are de-energised, the elastic force causes the contact elements to return to their initial state.
The contactor design distinguishes between essential elements such as the set of main contacts responsible for conducting large operating currents and auxiliary contacts used to perform control and signalling functions in Automation systems. Due to the dynamic nature of their operation, contactors are designed with respect to the resistance to arc arising during switching operations, often through the use of extinguishing chambers.
Contactors are commonly used in industrial applications to control electric motors, pumps, heaters, lighting and in complex automation and process control systems. Their design allows repeated, fast and reliable switching of large loads with minimal wear on the working components. In modern solutions, contactors are found equipped with surge suppression systems , communication interfaces and diagnostic functions, which allows integration with energy management systems and monitoring of equipment operation.
Contactor ratings, such as coil voltage, rated current contacts, switching capacity and category of use (e.g. AC-1, AC-3), must be closely matched to the load characteristics and operating conditions to ensure high mechanical and electrical life of the device.
