A combiner is a logic or electronic circuit whose function is to perform the addition of two or more input signals. Others, depending on the technological context, a combiner can take different forms - from simple digital gates that perform the addition of binary bits, to analogue circuits that add up voltages or currents in signal processing systems. It is one of the basic functional blocks in digital systems, Automation and analogue electronics.
In digital electronics, the most common case is the binary adder, which takes as input two numbers in bit form and, in more advanced versions, an additional carry-in bit from the previous stage. The result of the operation is the sum of these numbers and the output carry-out bit. Such circuits are used in processors, arithmetic logic units (ALUs), counters and code converters. Others implementations of digital adders exist, ranging from simple single-bit (half-adder) adders to fast multi-bit adders using algorithms to speed up carry-out propagation.
In analogue systems, the combiner can take the form of an operational circuit, where the input voltages are summed according to the operating principles of an operational amplifier in a summing configuration. Such solutions are used in audio systems, proportional controllers, filters and analogue-to-digital converters, where it is required to combine multiple input signals into a single output signal with controlled amplitude.
Regardless of the implementation, the essence of the operation of the combiner is the logical or mathematical compatibility of the combining operation with the functional requirements of a given system. In many applications, it also plays an intermediate role in more complex arithmetic operations such as multiplication or data conversions.
