A busbar is a conductive component of a power system used to distribute and transmit large electrical currents between different circuits, devices or segments of the installation. Due to its purpose, a busbar must have a low resistance and sufficient mechanical and thermal strength to allow the safe conduction of high currents without excessive energy losses or overheating.
It is usually made from highly conductive metals such as copper or aluminium and takes the form of flat bars, tubes or profiles of various cross-sections. Depending on the application, it can be found as part of low-, medium- or high-voltage systems - in switchgear, control cabinets, transformer stations and extensive industrial and infrastructure power distribution systems.
The busbar acts as a common power point to which many consumers, circuit breakers, fuses or other installation devices are connected. Its design allows for simpler connection layouts, easier servicing and greater flexibility in circuit configuration. In electronic and digital systems, the term 'bus' (bus) is also sometimes used in a logical sense to refer to a common line for the transmission of data, control signals or power, but in an electrotechnical context it always means a physical element.
In electrical installations, busbars must comply with specific standards for permissible loads, short-circuit resistance, insulation and electromagnetic compatibility. Others use different fastening, insulation and cooling systems for them, depending on the operating environment and the nature of the loads. A correctly designed busbar is crucial to the safety, reliability and efficiency of the entire power system.
