Tabulating (lookup table, LUT) is a technique used in computer science, electronics and digital systems to replace complex calculations or logic operations by direct access to pre-prepared results stored in an array. Instead of recalculating the value of a function each time in real time, the system refers to a ready-made set of data, which significantly reduces processing time and reduces the hardware or software complexity of the solution.
LUTs are commonly used in microprocessors, FPGAs, DSP (Digital Signal Processing) systems, as well as in computer graphics algorithms, data compression or encoding. In digital circuits, the LUT often has the function of mapping input bits to specific output states according to predefined logic. In the context of programming, arrays allow e.g. fast calculation of values of trigonometric functions, logarithms or interpolation operations, which is particularly important in systems with limited computing resources.
In digital electronics, especially in programmable logic structures such as FPGAs, LUTs are the basic blocks that implement combinational functions. Each LUT can map any binary logic function depending on the number of inputs, making it a versatile and flexible tool for implementing user logic. In this case, arrays contribute to shortening the logic paths and thus improving the speed of the entire circuit.
Arraying can be implemented in both static memory (ROM, SRAM) and dynamic memory, and its effectiveness depends on the proper design of the addressing structure and the way the data is stored. It is an effective method especially when the calculation of function values is time or resource intensive and the number of possible inputs is limited and well defined.
